Annie Oberlies

Born in 2002, in the midst of a digital revolution, my work explores what it means to be human in a society driven by efficiency, consumerism, and mass production. I grapple with how industrialization and societal values shape our environments, our minds, and our culture, which often feel devoid of authenticity and connection. Through my art, I examine themes of social disconnection, evolution, and power, incorporating neuroscience to explore how experiences in a mass-produced society embed themselves in our very tissue. My recent works, like bushel-peck-hug, use materials such as sheep brain sections encased in dystopian snow globes to reflect on inherited behaviors, consumerism, and cultural erosion, inviting viewers to question the values that define modern life in the U.S.
